Numbers, not opinions

Measured, written down, and handed to you.

Pad thickness, rotor thickness against the minimum stamped on the hat, hose condition, fluid moisture, parking brake travel. You get the readings and what they mean, whether or not anything needs doing today.

Turning a breakdown into a scheduling decision

Brakes almost never fail without warning. They wear on a curve that is measurable months ahead of the day they strand somebody, and the whole value of an inspection is catching the vehicle while it is still a calendar entry rather than a phone call from the shoulder.

A pad at three millimeter is information. You know roughly how long you have, you can book the work for a morning that suits you, and the rotor underneath is probably still good. Ignore that same pad for two months and you are buying a rotor as well, possibly a caliper, and paying for a tow to get the vehicle somewhere it can be worked on.

That gap is the entire argument. The measurement costs a fraction of what the ignored measurement costs, and it is the one service where hearing “everything is fine, see you next year” is a perfectly good outcome.

Worth booking ifYou are buying a used vehicle, heading into a towing season, running vehicles you do not personally drive, or you have simply never had it checked.

What you payWhat it’ll cost before the truck leaves, and because there is no hourly minimum, a check that turns up nothing is billed as the short job it was.

What actually gets measured

An inspection that is a walk around and a glance through the wheel spokes is not worth paying for. These are the readings that go on the sheet.

  1. Pad thickness, each cornerMeasured with the wheel off, not guessed at through a gap. Corners wear unevenly, and a single sticking slide pin shows up as one pad far ahead of its neighbor.
  2. Rotor thickness against the stamped minimumEvery rotor carries a minimum thickness cast or stamped into the hat. A micrometer reading against that number is the difference between a rotor with life left and one that is already past being safe to machine.
  3. Hoses, lines and fittingsLooking for swelling, cracking at the flex points, weeping at the crimps, and corrosion where hard line runs along the frame. Hoses on a vehicle are all the same age, so one bad one raises questions about the rest.
  4. Fluid moistureA reading rather than a look at the color. It decides whether a flush is due now or can wait, which is not something the reservoir appearance reliably tells you.
  5. Parking brake travelHow many clicks or how far the pedal goes before it holds. Cables stretch and rear shoes wear quietly, and this is usually the first thing to fail a safety check.

A moisture reading settles the fluid question in a minute. Color alone has talked plenty of people out of a service they needed.

Commercial units and pushrod stroke

On air brake vehicles the measurement that matters most is pushrod stroke: how far the rod travels out of the chamber when the brakes are applied. Past the adjustment limit, that brake is doing less than its share, and an inspector will put the vehicle out of service for it.

It is also the item that drifts quietly. Automatic slack adjusters are supposed to take up wear, and when one stops doing that properly nothing feels different from the driver’s seat until a scale house measures it. Checking stroke across the unit takes minutes and is the single best predictor of whether a truck passes.

We do this at your yard, at the shipper, or wherever the unit is parked between runs, which is generally the only time it is standing still.

Typical checkAround an hour for a four wheel vehicle with all wheels off, longer for a multi axle unit.
You keepThe actual readings per corner, so the next person measuring has something to compare against.
Fleet workScheduled around dispatch, a few units at a time, early or late as the lot allows.
The numberA real number before we roll, and a clean inspection is billed as a short visit.

Working through a lot a few units at a time spreads the repairs across a quarter instead of having them all arrive as breakdowns.

Why fleets book these on a rhythm

One vehicle can be managed by ear. The driver notices a noise and says something. Across a dozen vehicles that breaks down: drivers change, nobody owns a particular truck, and small complaints go unreported until the vehicle stops.

Measuring on a schedule replaces that with a list. You learn which units are close, which are fine, and roughly when each will come due, so the work spreads across a quarter instead of arriving as three simultaneous failures in a week when you are already short on vehicles.

It also settles arguments with drivers. A recorded thickness per corner is not a matter of opinion, and when the same unit’s readings are compared visit to visit you can see which routes and which drivers are hardest on brakes.

What an inspection usually turns into

Most checks end with nothing to do. When something does need doing, it is generally on this list, and it can usually be handled the same visit.

Brake pad replacement

The most common finding by a distance. Caught at the measuring stage, it stays a pad job rather than becoming a pad and rotor job.

Brake rotor replacement

When the micrometer says the disc is at or under its stamped minimum, or the face is scored deeply enough that new pads would never bed properly.

Brake line repair

A swollen or weeping hose found during the check, replaced and bled before it becomes a leak somewhere inconvenient.

Mobile brake repair

Whatever the measurements call for, done at the same location rather than booked as a second visit somewhere else.

Fleet inspections

The same measurements across a whole yard, recorded per unit, so the repairs can be planned instead of reacted to.

Questions

What people ask before booking a check

If yours is not here, the phone is quicker than typing. Somebody picks up.

What do you actually measure during a brake inspection?

Pad thickness at each corner with the wheels off, rotor thickness with a micrometer against the minimum stamped on the hat, the condition of every hose and accessible line, a moisture reading on the fluid, and parking brake travel. On air brake vehicles we add pushrod stroke at each chamber. You get the readings, not a verdict.

Will you tell me nothing needs doing?

Often, and that is a legitimate result. There is no hourly minimum to pad out, so a check that finds a healthy system is billed as the short visit it was. Being told the truth when there is no work in it is the reason people call back when there is.

Can you inspect brakes without taking the wheels off?

You can look through the spokes and get a rough idea, and plenty of places will call that an inspection. It cannot give you a rotor measurement, it misses the inner pad, which is frequently the worn one, and it tells you nothing about the hoses. We take the wheels off, because otherwise the numbers are guesses.

How often should a work truck be checked?

It depends on the miles and the loads far more than the calendar. Vehicles that run loaded, tow, or work hills wear brakes several times faster than the same unit running empty around town. Most fleets we see settle into a rhythm where every unit gets measured a few times a year, staggered so the lot is never short.

Do you inspect trailers and air brake vehicles?

Yes. Pushrod stroke, chamber and slack adjuster condition, lining thickness and drum condition on air brake units, plus electric trailer brakes and the wiring behind them. We come to the yard or the shipper, because that is where the unit is actually standing still.

I am buying a used vehicle. Can you check it before I commit?

That is a good use of an hour. Brakes are one of the easier things for a seller to disguise, since new pads on worn rotors look and feel fine for a few weeks. Measurements tell you what you are buying, and we can meet you wherever the vehicle is.

Get it measured

Knowing beats finding out on a hill.

Tell us the vehicle or how many units are in the yard, and we will tell you what a check runs and when we can be there. For fleets we will work around dispatch rather than asking you to work around us.
