Tested at the curb before anything gets sold

Vallejo’s mechanic brings the load tester, not just the battery.

A car that will not turn over in the ferry lot, in a driveway off Springstowne, or in a yard on Mare Island gets tested where it sits. Half of these calls end with clean posts and a tightened ground rather than a part on the invoice, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a battery.

Cold damp mornings off the strait are what kills them here

Vallejo sits right on the Carquinez Strait, and the mornings show it. The air comes in wet and cold off the water, the oil in the engine thickens overnight, and the starter has to pull harder at exactly the moment the battery has least to give. A battery that cranked a car cheerfully all September can fail on the first genuinely cold morning in November without anything having changed except the temperature.

Salt does the slower half of the damage. Marine air carries it inland along the strait, it settles on the lead posts and on every bare cable end under the hood, and within a couple of years there is enough green and white crust on a terminal that current can no longer get across the joint. The car behaves exactly the way a dead battery behaves: nothing at all, one tired click, or a dashboard that lights up and then browns out as soon as the key goes further.

Where these calls come fromThe ferry terminal lot, driveways off Springstowne and up toward Glen Cove, workplace lots on Mare Island, and the I-80 shoulders at Redwood Parkway and Tennessee Street.

What it costsA real number before the truck leaves, and no hourly minimum, so a terminal clean is billed like a terminal clean.

The whole serviceThe mobile battery replacement page covers what this looks like across Napa and Solano.

Testing beats swapping

Three parts produce the same silence at the key

A battery, an alternator and a starter can all leave you sitting in the same quiet car, and from the driver’s seat they are almost impossible to tell apart. That is the entire reason parts get thrown at this problem so often. Somebody buys a battery, the car starts, everyone relaxes, and two weeks later it is dead again because the alternator was never putting anything back.

The separation is quick with a meter. A battery that passes a load test but sits at low voltage after a drive is a charging fault, not a battery fault. A battery that tests strong while the starter only clicks or groans is a starter or a cable problem. And a battery that fails a load test outright has simply reached the end of its life, which around here tends to come sooner than the sticker suggests.

A red truck parked inside an industrial workshop
Work trucks are a large share of these calls, and a unit carrying two or three batteries tied together fails at the cables about as often as at a battery.

The jump start that works twice is telling you something

A car that needs a jump once had a bad night. A car that needs a jump twice in a week has a fault that is still there, and the jump is now a diagnosis rather than a fix.

Once, after lights left on

Forgivable and usually harmless. A drive long enough to put the charge back and the car is fine. Worth a load test anyway if the battery is older than three years.

Twice in a week

Something is either drawing current overnight or failing to replace it during the day. A new battery here buys a few weeks and then the same morning happens again.

It dies again while driving

Charging. The engine has been running on stored power since the alternator quit, which is why the stop happens on the freeway rather than in the driveway.

Jumps fine, dies at the next stop

Same answer. The jump proved the engine runs, which means the fault is in what keeps it running, not in what starts it.

Will not take a jump at all

Usually a connection rather than a battery. A corroded post or a stretched clamp cannot pass jump current either, and cleaning it often ends the call.

Cranks slowly even after a jump

Look at the starter and the heavy cables. The current is getting there and something is refusing to use it properly.

A battery flat every third morning is almost never a bad battery. Something is awake in there that should be asleep.

Parasitic draw, the commonest hidden fault
Draw

Something awake overnight versus a battery at the end of its life

These two look identical in the morning and need completely different work. A battery at the end of its life fails a load test and gets replaced. A battery being drained by a circuit that never shuts down passes every test you can throw at it and still hands you a dead car three days later.

Vallejo driving makes the second one worse. A run down to the ferry lot, a trip along Sonoma Boulevard and back, a short hop over to American Canyon, none of those is long enough for the alternator to replace what starting the engine cost. Add a dash camera, a remote start module or an aftermarket stereo, and the battery drifts downward for months without ever being flat until the one morning it is.

How a Vallejo battery call actually runs

Most of these finish in one visit, in the parking space or the driveway where the vehicle already is. The order is what matters, because skipping the testing is how somebody ends up buying two batteries in three months.

  1. You describe what it didNothing at all, one click, slow cranking, or it started fine yesterday and is dead this morning. Each of those points somewhere different, and the answer shapes what comes off the truck.
  2. The number, before we leaveYou hear what the visit and the likely work run while still on the phone. American Canyon borders Vallejo at the north end, so the arrival window is honest rather than hopeful.
  3. Test where it sitsResting voltage, a load test, charging output at the terminal with the engine running, and a look at the posts, clamps and ground strap while the hood is up.
  4. The actual repairClean and retighten, replace clamps or a corroded cable end, or fit a battery in the correct group size with the right hold down. The old unit leaves with us for recycling.
  5. Prove it before we goEngine started, charging voltage checked at idle and at speed, and a draw check when the battery went flat overnight for no reason anybody can name.

Half of these calls end with clean posts and a tightened ground. We would rather tell you that than sell you a battery.

The area

The ground this covers

Driveways in Springstowne and Glen Cove, the ferry terminal lot, the waterfront blocks, and the shoulders either side of the Highway 37 junction. Everything else we handle in town is listed on the Vallejo page, and you can see the kind of work we turn up for in the gallery.

Questions

What people ask when the car will not turn over

How do you know it is the battery and not the alternator or the starter?

Testing, not guessing. All three produce the same silence at the key, so we load test the battery, measure charging output at the terminal with the engine running, and check what the starter draws. That separates them in about five minutes, and it happens before anybody talks about buying a part.

Why does salt air matter to a battery?

The marine air coming in along the strait carries salt, and salt builds crust on the lead posts and on any bare cable end under the hood. Enough of that and current cannot cross the joint, so a perfectly healthy battery behaves like a dead one. Wire brushing the posts back to bright metal and fitting fresh clamps is the whole fix on a lot of these visits.

My battery goes flat every few mornings. Will a new one fix that?

Probably not on its own. Either something is drawing current while the car sleeps or the charging system is not replacing what starting takes out. We put a meter in the circuit and pull fuses until the draw disappears, which names what is staying awake. Fitting a battery without finding that just gives you the same dead car later.

I got it jump started twice this week. Is that bad?

It means the fault is still there. One jump after leaving the lights on is nothing. A second jump within a few days says the battery is failing, something is draining it overnight, or the alternator has quit and the engine has been running on stored power. At that point the jump has become a diagnosis rather than a repair.

Do you carry batteries or do I need to buy one first?

We carry them. Common automotive group sizes and heavy truck batteries ride on the truck, so most Vallejo calls finish in one visit. Unusual sizes, AGM units for vehicles with stop start systems and some European fitments get sourced first and fitted on a scheduled return.

Get help now

Dead in a Vallejo driveway is a today problem.

A flat battery does not recover sitting there, and one left flat long enough rarely comes back all the way. One number reaches the mechanic himself at any hour of any day. Tell us the vehicle, what it did when you turned the key, and where it is parked, and you will have a price and an arrival window before the call ends.
