One cylinder misfiring. That does not make it the injector.
A dead miss on number three could be the injector, the coil, the plug or the compression behind all three. Freeman Roadside Repair finds out which one with a balance test, at your location, before a set of injectors gets ordered.

The test that decides whether you buy parts
An injector is a solenoid valve holding back pressurized fuel and opening for a few thousandths of a second at a time. When it stops doing that cleanly, the cylinder it feeds runs lean, runs rich, or does nothing at all. The scan tool reports a misfire on that cylinder and a lot of people stop reading there.
The problem is that a cylinder misfire has four or five plausible causes and the injector is rarely the cheapest of them. A fouled spark plug looks identical on the code reader. So does a coil pack that has started breaking down under heat. So does a burnt valve, and that one is not a fuel repair at all. Ordering injectors on the strength of a P0303 is how people spend real money and still have the same miss.
So we test. An injector balance test measures the pressure drop in the rail when each injector is fired on its own, one at a time, with everything else quiet. A healthy set drops the rail by nearly the same amount. The one that drops it far less is restricted. The one that drops it far more is leaking or stuck open. That is a number you can act on, and it takes a fraction of what a set of injectors costs.
Where the numbers come back even across the board, the fault is somewhere else, and we go and find it instead of selling you the part you came in expecting to buy.
What brings people hereA steady miss on one cylinder, a rough idle that smooths out at speed, fuel smell at the tailpipe on a cold start, black smoke from a diesel, or a hot engine that cranks and cranks before it catches.
What the job runsYou hear one figure for the testing and a second figure for whatever the testing finds, both before anybody starts. Nothing gets added on the back end.

Cleaning works more often than people expect
Most gasoline injectors that test weak are not worn out. They are dirty. Deposits build on the pintle and the spray tip, the cone pattern turns into a dribble, and atomization goes to pieces. The cylinder gets fuel but not in a form it can burn properly, so it runs rough and the trims go chasing it.
- On-car cleaningA concentrated solvent run through the rail with the fuel pump disabled, so the engine runs on cleaner for several minutes. Cheap, quick, and it fixes a genuine share of restricted injectors.
- When cleaning is a waste of timeAn injector that is electrically dead, mechanically stuck open, or leaking down the rail overnight will not be improved by solvent. The balance test tells us which category yours is in before we spend your money on either path.
- Replacing one against replacing the setOn a high-mileage engine, a single new injector flowing perfectly next to five tired ones can make the imbalance worse. We will say when that applies and when a single replacement is genuinely fine.
- The seals and the O-ringsEvery injector that comes out goes back in with fresh seals. A reused hardened O-ring is a fuel leak in a hot engine bay, and that is not a corner worth cutting to save a few minutes.
- The relearn afterwardsPlenty of engines want the fuel trims cleared and the adaptations reset once the fueling changes. Skipping that leaves the computer compensating for a fault that no longer exists.
The carbon problem people blame on injectors
Direct injection engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder instead of onto the back of the intake valve. That is good for efficiency and bad for the valve, because the valve no longer gets washed by fuel on every cycle. Oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system bakes onto it instead, and after enough miles the valve stem carries a crust thick enough to disturb airflow.
The symptoms read like injector failure. Rough cold idle, a stumble off the line, misfire codes that wander between cylinders. Replace the injectors and every one of those symptoms is still there, because the injectors were never the problem.
This is why the inspection matters more than the parts list. A borescope down the intake port settles it in a couple of minutes, and a carbon cleaning is a completely different job from an injector job. Knowing which one you need is worth more than the diagnosis costs.

Anybody can sell you six injectors. The work is proving you need them, and telling you plainly when you do not.

Diesel injectors are their own conversation
A common rail diesel injector opens against thousands of pounds of pressure and is built to a tolerance a gasoline injector never sees. The parts cost several times more, the return flow test is a separate procedure, and a set of them is a decision worth making on evidence rather than a hunch. These are the related jobs that come up around it.
Diesel fuel system service
Lift pumps, water separators and filters on trucks and equipment, handled where the unit is parked rather than on a tow bill.
Fuel system diagnostics
Pressure, volume and leak-down testing when the fault sits upstream of the injectors entirely.
Spark plug replacement
The other half of a misfire. A fouled plug or a failing coil reads on the scan tool exactly like a dead injector.
Fuel filter replacement
A restricted filter starves the rail and drags every injector’s delivery down together, which shows as an even set of bad numbers.
Check engine light diagnostics
Start here when there is a code but no obvious symptom, and let the live data decide where the work goes.
Mobile diesel mechanic
Trucks, tractors and equipment, diagnosed and repaired at the yard, the field or the shoulder.
Asked before the wrench comes out
If none of these describes your engine, say so on the phone and we will work through it from the symptom end.
Can a dirty injector be cleaned instead of replaced?
Often, yes. A restricted injector with deposits on the pintle and spray tip usually responds to an on-car solvent treatment run through the rail, and that costs a fraction of new parts. What does not respond is an injector that is electrically open, stuck mechanically, or leaking down the rail while the engine sits. The balance test sorts one group from the other before either decision gets made.
Does a misfire code on one cylinder prove the injector failed?
No. That code says the cylinder is not contributing power, and there are several ordinary reasons for that. A fouled plug, a coil breaking down under heat, a vacuum leak at that runner, low compression from a burnt valve, all produce the same code. Swapping the coil and plug with a neighboring cylinder to see whether the misfire follows takes minutes and rules out the cheap causes first.
Should all the injectors be replaced at once?
It depends on mileage and on what the flow numbers look like across the set. If five injectors test close to each other and one is clearly out, replacing the single one is reasonable. If the whole set is tired and one has simply failed first, a lone new injector delivering perfectly next to five weak ones can make the imbalance worse than it was. We will show you the numbers and say which situation the engine is in.
Why did new injectors not fix the rough idle?
Because on a direct injection engine the usual culprit is carbon on the intake valves, not the injectors. With no fuel washing across the back of the valve, oil vapor bakes on and builds a crust that disturbs airflow into the cylinder. It produces a rough cold idle, hesitation off the line and misfires that move around. A borescope down the intake port confirms it in a couple of minutes, and the fix is a carbon cleaning rather than new parts.
How different is a diesel injector job?
Considerably. Common rail injectors operate at pressures a gasoline injector never approaches, the parts cost several times more, and each one carries a calibration code that has to be written into the engine computer when it is installed. There is also a return flow test that measures how much fuel each injector sends back, which finds an internally leaking unit that the pressure numbers alone would hide. It is a job worth confirming carefully before ordering anything.
Can this be done where the vehicle is parked?
Most gasoline injector work can, yes. Testing, cleaning, and replacement on engines with reasonable rail access all happen in a driveway, a yard or a lot without the vehicle moving. What changes the answer is an intake manifold that has to come off to reach the rail, which is time and a clean working space rather than a different set of tools. You will know which one applies as soon as we identify the engine.
Prove it before you pay for it.
Describe the miss, the mileage and whether it is worse cold or hot, and you will hear back what the testing costs and how soon somebody can be in front of the engine. Send the details over or use the number.
